SAME Summer Camps

GET READY FOR 2013 SAME SUMMER ENGINEERING CAMPS

The Society of American Military Engineers offers a very unique series of engineering camps designed for High School students who excel in math, science and technical courses and are interested in pursuing engineering in college. These one–week camps are high energy, hands–on events for students from across the country and around the world. The camps are led by a professional staff of engineers from both private industry and the military services. These exciting week–long camps take place during the summer months in a variety of settings—centered on a military base in the colorful Colorado Rockies, the beautiful Southern California Coast, in the historic Mississippi Valley, and at Camp LeJuene, North Carolina.

There are four camps this year, and the Greater Kansas City Post will select our top applicants and submit their names to our National organization for final selection.  Our post can sponsor up to two campers.  In sponsoring our selected campers, the Greater KC Post will pay one-half of the camp fee ($550 total fee, with the camper responsible for $275 of the fee), and we will pay for transportation to the camp.

The four camps this year are:

U.S. Army Camp – Vicksburg, Mississippi  from June 16 to 22, 2013

U.S. Air Force Academy Camp – Colorado Springs, Colorado, from June 27 to July 3, 2013

U.S. Navy Seabees Camp – Port Hueneme, California, July 21 to 27, 2013

U.S. Marine Corps Camp – Camp LeJune, North Carolina, June 23 to 29, 2013

Applications are due by March 15, 2013 for the U.S. Army Camp, and by April 5, 2013 for all other camps.  Applications can be found at http://samecamps.org/ and must be submitted to Ted Hartsig at thartsig@oaconsulting.com.  Please call Ted if you have questions at 913-748-2615.

Each year we receive several applications from very well qualified students.  Unfortunately we can only select up to two campers.  To qualify for consideration, students must meet the following criteria:

  1. Student must be a U.S. Citizen.
  2. The student must have completed at least their freshman year of high school.
  3. The student must still be enrolled in school at the time of the camp.
  4. Be on a high school track that will provide a basis for attending an accredited engineering college or university (i.e., taking appropriate math and science courses).
  5. Have an expressed intent to pursue a degree in architecture, engineering or a related field.
  6. Have demonstrated leadership characteristics through participation in extra-curricular activities, sports, and/or community activities.
  7. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 GPA scale.
  8. Students who have attended an SAME Engineering and Construction Camp prior to this year will not be eligible to attend the same camp. Students are eligible to attend a specific camp once only.
